Job Description

The company Canvas is seeking a talented Technical Director to join our global production team. The Technical Director plays a critical role in the planning, execution, and delivery of high-quality live and recorded productions for both internal and external audiences.

This role is responsible for leading the technical execution of events by operating and managing broadcast production systems, including video switchers, streaming encoders, virtual routing systems, audio consoles, graphics platforms, multi-viewers, prompters, and other control room technologies. Technical Directors serve as the central point of coordination during live productions, ensuring all technical elements are executed seamlessly and according to plan.

Beyond technical execution, Technical Directors work closely with producers, engineers, presenters, and event stakeholders throughout the event lifecycle. They provide technical consultation during pre-production, help shape event workflows and production approaches, identify potential risks, and develop solutions that ensure successful event outcomes. Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills are essential, as the role requires the ability to lead complex productions, coordinate multi-location teams, and make critical decisions in fast-paced live environments.

Your Role:

Technical Directors lead the execution of live, virtual, hybrid, and recorded productions from the company Canvas's Broadcast Control Center in Chicago, Illinois, while supporting events originating from company studios, conference facilities, remote offices, and platforms such as Microsoft Teams.

As a Technical Director, you will serve as both a technical production expert and trusted advisor, partnering with producers, presenters, engineers, and stakeholders throughout the event lifecycle. You will help translate event objectives into effective production solutions while ensuring seamless execution.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Lead the technical execution of live, virtual, hybrid, and recorded productions.
  • Design and manage production workflows utilizing Video switching, streaming, routing, graphics, recording, and conferencing technologies.
  • Consult with stakeholders during pre-production to define requirements and recommend technical solutions.
  • Partner with producers and clients from planning through final delivery.
  • Direct and coordinate technical teams during live events, ensuring clear communication across all participants.
  • Execute productions featuring presenters connecting from studios, conference rooms, remote locations, and collaboration platforms.
  • Troubleshoot technical challenges and develop contingency plans for critical productions.
  • Transform abstract event concepts into practical and innovative production experiences.
  • Communicate confidently with clients, executives, and senior leadership.
  • Drive continuous improvement through new technologies, workflows, and production techniques.
  • Maintain exceptional quality standards in fast-paced, high-pressure environments.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in live broadcasting, event production, or broadcast operations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree in Broadcasting, Communications, Media Production, or a related field
  • Experience operating broadcast production switchers, particularly Ross Video systems.
  • Experience with video routing, multiviewers, and signal management systems, including Evertz solutions.
  • Experience with streaming platforms, digital media encoders, and webcast technologies.
  • Experience with audio consoles, graphics systems, media servers, and production playback workflows.
  • Experience supporting events utilizing Microsoft Teams, video conferencing platforms, and remote contributor workflows.
  • Understanding of digital video transport and streaming technologies, including SDI, NDI, SRT, H.264, H.265, MPEG, and IP-based video workflows.
  • Proficiency with Windows-based operating systems and production software.
  • Experience supporting executive-level communications and high-profile client-facing events.

Hourly Salary Range $24.42 to $54.52
