Position Overview: The Director of Engineering leads, manages, and mentors a team of senior and junior mechanical engineers and assumes ultimate responsibility as the Mechanical Engineer of Record (MEOR) for large-scale design-build projects. Responsibilities include team/personnel resource assignments, adherence to project budget goals, design innovation and out-of-the-box thinking, resource support and extremely competent technical guidance for operations and project team-members, code and standard expertise, development/enhancement and enforcement of company design standards, development and deployment of team/staff technical training modules, ongoing continuing education and enforcement of same across his/her respective team, and regular interface with peers, customers, vendors, contractors, and consultants.
Key Responsibilities:
- Client Interaction: Serve as a primary point of contact for clients as needed, ensuring Therma engineering product and design approach are aligned with in-house best-practices and design standards, customer expectations, contract requirements, project budget, and Therma operations leadership direction. This includes supporting business development activities such as pre-bid design oversight and assistance, leading and/or participating in post-bid interviews, and assisting with creation of Professional Design Services proposals.
- Strategic Planning: Develop and implement personnel development and training plans; ongoing audit and enhancement of Therma design-build standards.
- Technical Guidance: Provide expert technical guidance for projects, and operations/engineering personnel
- Team Leadership: Recruit, train, and provide technical leadership to engineering personnel. Assign and designate tasks to ensure the development of staff abilities and task/skill alignment.
- Collaboration: Work closely with other departments, including Business Development, Capital Projects, Service, and Fabrication to ensure successful and well-informed project pursuits, project planning, preconstruction, and construction execution.
- Budget & Cost Management: Oversee group/department expenses to ensure alignment with annual budget. Manage personnel resources, assign staff, enforce accountability, audit and control overhead utilization rate, and scale team as required to support workload while minimizing overhead expense.
Qualifications:
- Licensed Mechanical Engineer in the state of California
- Minimum of 15 years of experience in engineering, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
- Extensive experience in the design-build mechanical construction industry
- Strong technical understanding of engineering and construction principles, preconstruction planning, and construction oversight and practices.
- Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Proven ability to lead and manage a team of engineers and construction professionals.
- Knowledge of safety regulations and standards.
- Ability to work collaboratively with various departments and stakeholders.
Work Environment:
- The Director of Engineering Services will primarily work in an office environment but will also be required to visit construction sites regularly.
Travel to local job sites is required.
