The VR Training Developer owns the interactivity layer of Moth+Flame's VR training modules: the procedural logic, physics, and UI inputs that transform 3D environments into hands-on training experiences. This contract role exists because great 3D art alone does not make a training module; it takes a developer who can make objects behave, respond, and teach.
We are looking for a developer who is both deeply technical and highly practical, capable of building Unity and WebXR experiences (utilizing Claude or similar). They should understand how trainees learn and create interactive experiences that make training engaging and effective. This is not a generalist software engineering role. This is a specialist role for someone who has built procedural training, simulation physics, or interactive VR systems and knows the difference between code that runs and code that teaches.
The work is tied to a live military training contract with fixed delivery windows. Speed, quality, and accountability are not trade-offs here - they are all required. This is a remote, contract role based in the U.S.
Outcomes:
- Deliver Interactivity for Government Client. Within the contract delivery window, build the full interactivity layer across 5 hard-skills training modules. This includes trigger logic, physics simulations, and UI interactions; everything that makes the modules function as training tools, not just 3D environments.
- Own the Procedure Layer End-to-End. Take robust 3D assets from the art team and wire them into complete, testable training procedures. A module is not done until a trainee can move through the correct sequence of steps, make mistakes, and receive feedback.
- Develop Hard-Skills Procedure Modules: Build training experiences in which trainees perform real maintenance and operational tasks in VR. Examples include spray bottle physics, power tool animations, and touchscreen UI logic for aircraft systems.
- Establish a Repeatable Interactivity Framework. Take 3D assets and environments from the art team and implement all procedural logic: trigger volumes, physics-based interactions, UI input systems, step sequencing, and feedback mechanisms. Build in a way that the team can maintain and extend.
- Operate at Contract Pace. Military contracts have hard deadlines. Late delivery means no payment. You will need to communicate blockers early, and sustain high output through the critical delivery window.

Competencies
- AI-Amplified Execution: Leverage modern AI tooling to accelerate development. (Claude integration.)
- VR Interactivity & Physics. You have built real-time physics interactions in Unity. You know how to make objects behave the way trainees expect with the right resistance, feedback, and consequence when steps are done wrong.
- Procedural Thinking. You understand that a training procedure is a state machine: steps, conditions, branches, and outcomes. You can translate a subject-matter expert's task list into interactive training logic without losing fidelity.
- Independent Execution. You do not need a technical lead to spec out every task. You can receive a brief ("build the drill module") and figure out what that means, ask the right questions, and ship it. Ambiguity is something you resolve, not something that blocks you.
- Mission Alignment. You understand that the end user of this training is a military technician who needs to perform a real skill safely. You care whether the training actually works, not just whether it runs.
Experience
- Hands-on Unity/WebXR development with a focus on VR interactivity, physics systems, and UI (not primarily 3D modeling, animation, or rendering optimization).
- Experience building procedural or skills-based training simulations is strongly preferred. Defense, aviation, or maintenance training experience is a significant plus.
- Comfort working on contract timelines with fixed delivery windows and external stakeholder review cycles.

Engagement Type: Contractor / Freelance. Hours are variable and may be intensive during active delivery windows.
