Mechanical Engineer II, Sustaining

ICON is seeking a Mechanical Engineer II to support the design, development, and commercialization of cutting-edge construction technology. In this role, you’ll own the lifecycle of mechanical systems, from creating and updating drawings and documentation, to managing change orders and bills of materials, to driving quality in manufacturing processes. This position is hands-on and dynamic, requiring both technical depth in mechanical engineering and the flexibility to transition seamlessly between office, shop, and field environments. We’re looking for someone who thrives in fast-paced settings, brings strong problem-solving skills, and is eager to contribute to innovative solutions that redefine how the world builds. This role is based in ICON's Austin, TX office and reports to the Senior Manager, Sustaining Engineering.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Update existing and create new engineering drawings and documentation.
- Update and manage Bill of Materials
- Handle Engineering Change Orders, updating documentation and communicating to Manufacturing and Supply Chain teams.
- Execute and build process for QA/QC of mechanical systems in the manufacturing process.
- Create design solutions with excellent engineering and documentation processes.
- Design and create prototypes using in-house and external fabrication.
- Perform engineering calculations to support design work.
- Own development of systems through handofffor product commercialization.
- Drive engineering excellence and the adherence to the scientific method.
- Compile and analyze operational, test, and research data to establish technical specifications for designing or modifying products, processes, and materials.
- Must be willing to perform a wide range of tasks daily (e.g. Transition from office work to fieldwork at a moment’s notice).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's or Master's in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- 5+ years of professional work experience as a Mechanical Engineer.
- Demonstrated knowledge of component manufacturing processes (including machining, rapid prototyping, etc.).
- Demonstrated experience leading large system development projects.
- Proficiency in using parametric solid modeling and CAD software to design and document parts and assemblies.
- SolidWorks and PDM experience are required.
- Familiarity with making drawings and applicable drawing and tolerancing standards.
- Exceptional technical and problem-solving skills and reasoning ability.
- Adept at communicating in a collaborative team environment and seeking optimum solutions with other team members.
- Knowledge of the AGILE SCRUM methodology of project management.
- A service-oriented attitude when in a support role.
- Ability to prioritize and stay cool in a dynamic start-up environment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Previous automation industry experience.
- Previous manufacturing and quality experience.
- Previous start-up experience, and/or a resourceful innovative nature with an ability to streamline or develop efficient processes.
- Professional experience with thermal and mechanical FEA, and topological optimization. Ansys or Solidworks simulation.
- Ability to read and understand electrical schematics, and the ability to troubleshoot electrical and mechanical systems.
- Ability to create engineering drawings and technical documentation.
- Industrial safety system experience.
- A hunger for learning and personal growth.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
- Must be prepared to work, in part, in extreme environments: temps > 100 degrees or below freezing, sun, rain, mud, lack of electricity, etc. We get dirty.
- Must be able to travel 4+ weeks per year internationally.
